About Harris Tweed
Bikefood’s exclusive Harris Tweed scarves are hand woven on the Isle of Lewis to a design we developed working directly with the weaver. The colours chosen reflect the main Bikefood brand colours of silver-grey, black and yellow, plus subtle pin stripes in soft pink and green referencing our berry and protein products. The Bikefood scarf, is not just for cyclists of course, it is practical, warm, comfortable and smart enough to wear both in the city and the country.
Tweed has long had associations with cycling going back to the days of tweed caps and tweed cycling suits. In fact cycling and tweed are still a popular combination, so we thought it would be appropriate to launch our winter scarf using genuine Harris Tweed which is the most famous tweed of all. Harris Tweed is woven by crofters in the Outer Hebrides, mainly on the isles of Harris and Lewis, using locally produced wool and natural colours. They hand produce the cloth in small volumes using their own treadle looms. Our scarves are made on a small hand loom which is designed to produce the narrow width fabric which is perfect for scarves.
As we are a small family run business we believe it is important to support other small businesses wherever we can. Working with the weaver directly and using his experience to develop the right design and balance of colours for the Bikefood scarf seemed like the perfect arrangement for us. We are really pleased with the results and we hope you will be too!
Our scarves are approximately 26cm wide and 160cm long and are sent to you individually wrapped with genuine Harris Tweed labels, tags and a leaflet telling you about the history of Harris Tweed.
